“…from the moment this quietly spoken Maoriwoman stepped on stage and began her performance I knew I would never forgether… her a capella vocal strength sent shivers of awe down my spine.Mihirangi held the audience's avid attention… She absolutely blew usaway.”
Beat Magazine, Melbourne, Isabel Lim
For the past three years Mihirangi has been on a global whirlwind whichhas seen her astonishing one woman show capture and mesmerize audiences inCanada, USA, Australia and Aotearoa. She has quickly become a favourite atfestivals across the world and has had the privilege of performing with thelikes of K'Naan, Public Enemy, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Sly and Robbie,Lee Scratch Perry, Blue King Brown, The Resin Dogs, Salmonella Dub and Ladi6.
Singing in Maori and English with an extraordinary vocal range of power &expression, the "Princess of Funk" & "Queen of Loops" isa solo artist who creates her own band sound "live" in front of heraudience using a loop pedal. The key to her performance is the layeringof her own vocal sounds. From the foundation of phat solid bass lines tointricately layered harmonies, rhythmic ‘ska’ chops, sensuous jazzy riffs andbeat-boxing – it’s all done with her voice. A multi-instrumentalistMihirangi also plays percussion, guitar, keyboards, electronic percussion andtraditional Maori instruments.
Renowned for her distinctive vocal style, vitality and intensity, Mihirangipossesses both feminine tenderness and grrrrl power. An activist and dreamweaver with confidence and credibility Mihirangi also has a vocal presence inthe international political arena. She performed at "Power to ThePeaceful" Festival in San Francisco to an audience of 60,000 people insupport of social justice, non-violence, and environmental sustainability. Shewas a Sea Shepherd crew-member and played to an audience of globally activeartists including The Dixie Chicks, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pierce Brosnanand Martin Sheen at their 30th Anniversary Benefit concert in LA.
Playing out her concerns for indigenous, environmental and spiritual issues andendearing herself to audiences around the world, her journey and insight offersa refreshing perspective of contemporary culture. Although reverent in herdeliverance, when her groove kicks in, Mihirangi is all liberation and rawpower. Her utterly unique musical vision and the cross-culturalharmony that she herself represents will be heard.
“Anyone who has seen Mihirangi performing will know that, first of all, forall the political content in her lyrics, she laughs a lot… and that energy onstage is delivered with the most irresistible of beats.” DrumMedia, Michael Smith – Sydney
